Plot summary
Clive Riordan is a wealthy London psychiatrist. His wife Storm has become involved with an American, Bill Kronin, and Riordan settles on a revenge of his own design. He seizes Kronin at gunpoint and holds him in a concealed room that is entered through a garage in a part of London scarred by bombs. The police look into the missing American; without leads, the inquiry thins out within weeks. Riordan's scheme turns on keeping the man alive until the disappearance has been almost forgotten, so that a killing afterward would draw no suspicion toward a husband. He comes with food and supplies every day.

- Robert Newton had to post a £20,000 bond guaranteeing his sobriety for the whole of the 30-day shoot on Obsession, and according to director Edward Dmytryk he only began drinking on the last day of filming.
- Because Obsession's plot involves dissolving a body in acid, and that seemed to echo the case of the murderer John Haigh, the British Board of Film Censors at first refused it a certificate and its release was held up.
- Obsession's director Edward Dmytryk had recently left Hollywood after appearing before the House Un-American Activities Committee; he traveled to England in mid-1948 and got a Ministry of Labour work permit under the foreign directors' quota agreement.
- Edward Dmytryk said the producer, Nat Bronstein, wanted a part in Obsession for his opera-singing girlfriend and was upset when no part could be found for her.
- Obsession was shot near Grosvenor House, and the home of screenwriter Alec Coppel was turned into a temporary dressing room for the production.
