Sophie Okonedo
Biography
Sophie Okonedo is a British actress and narrator who studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and started in film with Young Soul Rebels (1991). She appeared in Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls (1995) and Dirty Pretty Things (2002), then earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress as Tatiana Rusesabagina in Hotel Rwanda (2004). Her films also include Æon Flux (2005), The Secret Life of Bees (2008), Skin (2008), Wild Rose (2019), and Death on the Nile (2022). On stage, she won a Tony Award for her role in A Raisin in the Sun in 2014, returned to Broadway in The Crucible in 2016, and was nominated for an Olivier Award for Antony and Cleopatra from 2018 to 2019 and for Medea in 2024. On television, she earned BAFTA TV Award nominations for Mrs. Mandela and Criminal Justice, plus another for Criminal: UK, and an Emmy nomination for Ratched.

Behind the award
In 2014, Sophie Okonedo played Ruth Younger in a revival of Lorraine Hansberry's A Raisin in the Sun, which marked her Broadway debut. That performance earned her the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play.
