Plot summary

Berlin, 1935. Nazi party members interrupt the opera performance of Charlotte Salomon's stepmother Paula and try to expel the Jewish audience. Charlotte's grandparents leave for Rome, but her father Albert and Paula choose to stay in Germany. Against her parents' wish that she become a seamstress, Charlotte wins a place at the Academy of Fine Arts and works in an expressionist style. Albert is sent to a concentration camp and returns two months later; his and Paula's exit visa sends Charlotte to southern France, where she lives with Ottilie Moore and her grandparents. There her grandmother's mind is failing, and she grows close to Alexander Nagler, who works on the grounds.
