Plot summary
Lily Owens, fourteen, lives with her widowed father, T. Ray, on a South Carolina peach orchard. Ten years before, at four, she accidentally shot her mother Deborah as Deborah tried to leave him. Rosaleen, the household's hired help, is her only friend. On Lily's birthday the two go into town so Rosaleen can register to vote, and Rosaleen is beaten and arrested. Lily breaks her out of the hospital and travel to Tiburon, the town written on a honey label from her mother's mementos. August Boatwright, a beekeeper, and her sisters May and June take them in.
