Plot summary
Birdy is fourteen and lives in 13th-century Lincolnshire with her father, Lord Rollo, her mother, Lady Aislinn, and her brother Robert. Her nurse is Morwenna, and her friend Perkin is a peasant boy. Rollo learns that the family is short of money and that a wealthy husband for Birdy would solve it. Birdy does not want to grow up and lose her freedom, so she chases off the suitors who come.
