Plot summary
Lacy is eleven in the summer of 1991 and lives in western Massachusetts with her single mother, Janet, an acupuncturist, and the two are close. At summer camp, Lacy telephones her mother at night and says she will kill herself if Janet does not come to pick her up. She regrets the call after she gets along well with two other campers. Janet is seeing Wayne, a taciturn man given to migraines and odd behavior. After an outing to the mall, Lacy becomes friendly with Sequoia, Wayne's daughter, though she dislikes Wayne himself.
