Plot summary
In 1965 in the Eastern Transvaal, Sandra Laing lives with her Afrikaner parents, Abraham and Sannie, who run a shop and raise her as their own daughter even though her appearance is mixed-race. She is sent to a boarding school in Piet Retief, where her brother Leon also studies, and the families of other pupils and members of staff object to her presence. State officials examine Sandra and classify her as coloured, and after a teacher beats her the school expels her. Her parents are shocked, and Abraham challenges the ruling in court, drawing press attention at home and abroad.
