Plot summary
In May 2021 the Moon is being colonized, and settlements such as Moon City and Farside 5 draw a diverse population. Bill Kemp, the first man on Mars, left Space Corporation because it wanted only commercial passenger flights, and now salvages satellites. Millionaire J.J. Hubbard hires him to capture a 6,000-ton sapphire asteroid from low lunar orbit with his old Moon 02 ferry and bring it down on the farside, which Space Corporation law forbids; Hubbard intends the sapphire for rocket engine insulators. Kemp learns his flight license will be revoked. Clementine Taplin arrives seeking her brother, a miner working Spectacle Crater on the farside, and asks Kemp to fly her there because the overland trip takes six days.

- Catherine Schell lost 13 pounds from wearing the film's moonsuit and was put on a diet of malted milk and chocolate to keep her weight up, while Ori Levy called the suits "sheer hell", getting blisters from chafing and back problems from the cooling air conditioner.
- Gavin Lyall's widow, Katharine Whitehorn, wrote in her 2007 autobiography that the people who made Moon Zero Two were dazzled by Kubrick's 2001 and made the film glossy and improbably perfect, the opposite of the gritty realism the story's authors intended.
