Plot summary
Farmer Ian Bellows disappears on Petrie's Island, a small community off Ireland's east coast, and Constable John Harris discovers the body in a cave, stripped of every bone. Dr Reginald Landers, the island's physician, cannot explain the death, so he crosses to the mainland for help from Dr Brian Stanley, a London pathologist. Stanley is baffled too, and the two men seek out Dr David West, a specialist in bones and the diseases that affect them. They interrupt West's quiet evening with Toni Merrill, but the puzzle interests him and he agrees to return with them and examine the corpse. Merrill offers her father's private helicopter so the group can reach the island quickly, on condition that she comes along.
