Plot summary
In 1943, during the Second World War, an Allied hospital ship strikes a mine in the South Pacific. Lieutenant Elizabeth Smythe, a U.S. military nurse, and Marine Corporal Michael J. "Chicken" Dugan are the only survivors. They come ashore on a tropical island that its native inhabitants have abandoned, and the months alone together bring the pair, despite the difference in their ages, into love. An airplane crash interrupts their life there. The wreck leaves one survivor, William Peck, a squadron leader in the Royal Air Force, who also falls for Elizabeth, and Dugan finds he has a rival on the island.
