Plot summary
On Dartmoor, Sir Charles Baskerville is found dead near the abbey ruins, his face twisted in horror, and the inquest blames his heart. Dr. Mortimer tells Sherlock Holmes the old story of a hell hound that killed Sir Hugo Baskerville, and asks him to look into the death, because the estate now passes to Sir Charles's nephew, Sir Henry. In London, Holmes and Dr. Watson meet Sir Henry, who has arrived to claim Baskerville Hall and complains that a boot has gone missing. A tarantula hidden in a boot makes Holmes sure the heir is a marked man. Holmes stays behind and sends Dr. Watson with Mortimer and Sir Henry to Dartmoor, where talk on the road is of Selden, a murderer who has escaped from the prison.

- Peter Cushing, who played Sherlock Holmes in the Hammer film, was a Holmes aficionado who re-read the stories and made detailed notes in his script to bring the detective closer to Arthur Conan Doyle's original. He objected when producer Anthony Hinds wanted to drop the famous deerstalker cap, arguing audiences would expect Holmes' headgear and pipes.
SPOILER
Where the novel made the hound look demonic using phosphorus paint, the film achieved the same effect with a mask, and the hound was played by a brindled Great Dane.- This 1959 Hammer production was the first adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle's novel The Hound of the Baskervilles to be filmed in color.
