Plot summary
A night alarm sends police to the premises of Stone and Company in Long Acre, where a man who says he is the nightwatchman lets them search and reports nothing wrong. The technician who resets the alarm does so without contacting the management. The next morning the safe is found empty, about £8,000 gone, and it had been opened with a key. Detective Superintendent Tom Halliday and Detective Sergeant Ward take the case. The officer who answered the alarm cannot identify the man from photographs, and Stone had not reported that his nightwatchman was in hospital. Halliday gets home to Bromley late. His son is disappointed that a promised trip to the Farnborough Air Display is called off.
