Plot summary
David and Jean Linton have moved from one rented flat to another, leaving unpaid bills behind them, and David, a would-be author with a drinking problem, has had affairs during the marriage. Jean's luck changes when a distant aunt leaves her a house, Four Winds, and £1,000. The couple visit the country property and decide to live there. The housekeeper, Mrs O'Brien, says the house already has a resident spirit, which she calls Patrick after her late husband, and Patrick soon makes himself known by shifting furniture and breaking mirrors. David spends his evenings at the pub, The Plough, rather than at home, and when the estate agent Morris Lumley offers £6,000 for Four Winds and its land, David cannot sell it because the property is in Jean's name. He hires Valerie Stockley to type his novel.
