Plot summary
Dr Brent, a psychologist, boards the ferry to his work in Liverpool, leaving his eleven-year-old son Johnny at home in New Brighton during a scarlet fever outbreak. Johnny does not bother to keep himself apart. He plays on the beach for the rest of the morning, and there talks a younger boy into swapping a large horseshoe magnet for an invisible watch. The boy's nanny is unhappy with the trade and chases Johnny, calling him a thief, and he is nearly run over by a car. Then he notices a religious sandwich man and takes it as retribution, so he decides to be rid of the magnet.
