Biography

Russell Waters was a Scottish-born actor who worked on stage and screen and was best known for his roles in British film. Born in Glasgow, he was educated at Hutchesons' Grammar School and the University of Glasgow, then began acting with the Old English Comedy and Shakespeare Company before moving into repertory theater, the Old Vic and the West End. On screen he was usually cast as mild-mannered characters, and he took the leading role in Richard Massingham's instructional short subjects, including Tell Me If It Hurts (1936). In features he played supporting parts such as Craggs in The Blue Lagoon (1949) and Wings Cameron in The Wooden Horse (1950). He was briefly seen as the harbor master in The Wicker Man (1973), and his last film role was Dr. Jones in Ken Loach's Black Jack (1979). On television he played the butler Stephens in a 1965 episode of The Human Jungle.
