- Ezra Miller was initially cast as James by Mary Harron but had to drop out because of scheduling conflicts with Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, so Harron cast newcomer Christopher Briney instead. Miller was given the part of a young Salvador Dalí, seen only in a few flashbacks.
- Though Dalíland is set in 1974 New York City, the film was largely shot in Liverpool, which was used to double for New York.
