Plot summary
Tora Hamilton works as a consultant surgeon. She moves with her husband, Duncan, to the Shetland Islands, which lie a hundred miles from the Scottish coast. In the peat soil around their new home she comes across the body of a young woman. Someone has cut rune marks into the dead woman's skin, and there is a hole in the body where the heart should be. People warn Tora to leave the corpse alone. She ignores the warnings, and what she finds links the death to an ancient legend. Dana Tulloch, a police officer who is six weeks pregnant, helps her.
