Plot summary
Two pairs of fraternal twins, Cane and Awan, and Eva and Seth, share a strong telepathic rapport, and their unnamed planet links people in hive minds through devices implanted in their necks, in a culture that prizes logic and utility. A space probe sends back Beethoven's Fifth, which the people take as proof of intelligent life though its purpose is unclear, since they have no music for art. Cane and Eva are chosen as astronauts; Awan and Seth remain at Mission Control, each traveler's only link home being a twin. A live virus is aboard the ship.
