Plot summary
A transplanted Texan, Bob Seton, comes to Lawrence, Kansas, and finds plenty to like about the town, taking particular notice of Mary McCloud, whose father runs the local bank. Politics are in the air, because the Civil War has not yet begun and the people of the Territory are sharply divided over whether it will stay free of slavery. Seton is a Union supporter. When the chance comes to run for marshal, he enters the race against William Cantrell, the schoolteacher the town holds in respect. The town knows Cantrell as an upstanding citizen. Andrew Grunch, known as Doc, is Seton's sidekick, and Mary's brother Fletcher, called Fletch, is naive and idealistic.
