Plot summary
Sam Houston is in Washington seeking statehood for Texas, and General Augustus LaRue governs the republic in his absence. LaRue imposes a tax on every wagon that uses the Santa Fe Trail and orders Captain Roy Colt and Sergeant Gabby Whittaker to collect it. Colt disapproves of his superior's tactics but plays along, since refusing would leave him unable to work against LaRue. Jane Tabor owns a freight wagon train, and she and her scout Hank Purdy refuse the tax. Colt arrests her and brings her before LaRue, who grants her a monopoly of the freight lines on the trail.
