Plot summary
France in 1719 is ruled by Philippe II, Duke of Orléans, regent for the child king Louis XV. Sophisticated, gentle and libertine, Philippe knows his royal authority is not real, and he leans on Guillaume Dubois, a priest without faith who cares for no one but himself, to keep the population cultured and content and to hold off peasant uprisings. His elder daughter, the Duchess of Berry, dies in July 1719, her health destroyed by a debauched life and secret pregnancies, and the autopsy finds her with child once more. Philippe takes the loss hard. In Brittany, the squire Pontcallec leads a rebellion, and Dubois looks to the revolt and the famine that follows as his route to an archbishopric.
