Plot summary
Twenty years on a tough quarter of Paris have taught René Boirond who the players are. He lets the small-time crooks keep working, and they repay him in cash, gifts and tips. His free time goes to betting on horses, dreaming of owning one, and his life at home is shared with Simone, a retired prostitute. When his partner retires, François Lesbuche is assigned to work with him, an idealistic young policeman from the provinces with firm ideas about right and wrong. René sets out to teach the newcomer how the quarter really works, and introduces him to Natacha, an expensive young woman whose profession he neglects to mention.
