Plot summary
Marie-Hélène, the daughter of the Paris bookseller Jean-Paul Rondin, has disappeared. Her father begins to look for her, and his search takes him beneath the streets of the city, where a community of misfits has settled after giving up on humanity. The group keeps a hierarchy of its own, and the conditions that drove its members below the pavement begin to show themselves again in their underground life, apart from the influence of the outside world.
