Plot summary
Autumn 1654, in the south of France. A runaway slave takes refuge in a convent; the horsemen hunting him break in, wounding the Mother Superior before riding off after him. Eloïse, a novice and the daughter of the retired musketeer D'Artagnan, confronts the intruders and is pushed aside. She keeps a bloodstained paper the slave had pressed to a wound and takes it for a coded message. After the Mother Superior dies, Eloïse vows to avenge her. Wearing men's clothes, she rides to Paris to ask her father for help. On the road a tavern sword fight brings her the company of Quentin la Misère, a young poet who follows her to the capital, where she finds D'Artagnan again.
