Plot summary
Alexandre Gartempe is a young farmer who works his land alone. Eliane Gartempe, his wife, known as La Grande, is authoritarian and materialistic; she chases him back to his chores whenever he rests, seeks a distraction, or dozes off from fatigue. The marriage is childless. When a car crash kills Eliane and her elderly parents, Alexandre decides to stop working and take his ease. He releases all his livestock and retires to his bed. In the nearby town hard work is held to be a virtue, and the dog that walks in with a basket in its mouth is the only sign that Alexandre is still alive.
