Plot summary
Ugo, who owns and cooks at a restaurant called The Biscuit Soup, Philippe, a magistrate, Marcello, an Alitalia pilot, and Michel, a television producer are friends who arrive together by car at Philippe's furnished but unused villa, where Hector, the old caretaker, has prepared the house for a feast. Their purpose is to eat themselves to death. Marcello and Ugo race to see which of them eats oysters fastest. Marcello argues that women should join them, and the friends plan to invite three prostitutes the following evening. A school class arrives asking to see the garden's linden tree of Boileau; the four show them the garden, the old Bugatti in the garage and a lunch in the kitchen, and they meet Andrea, the teacher, whom they invite to dinner. Philippe warns her about the company.
