Plot summary
In Florence, four friends who have known each other since childhood spend their free time together. Count Lello Mascetti is an impoverished nobleman with no means to support his family, though he keeps his pleasures and a mistress, Titti. Giorgio Perozzi is an easy-living journalist nagged by the disapproval of his wife and son. Rambaldo Melandri works for the city on the preservation and restoration of Florence's monuments and wants to find the ideal woman. Guido Necchi owns the café and pool hall where the four meet. Their pastime is the zingarata, a complicated practical joke played on the people around them, and their trips carry them wandering through Tuscany.

- The film was begun by Pietro Germi, who died before he could finish it; Mario Monicelli completed it, and the opening credits read "a film by Pietro Germi" before adding "directed by Mario Monicelli".
- Monicelli moved the set from Bologna to Florence because he was raised in Tuscany, and many of the film's zingarate pranks came from tricks he played in his own youth. The friends' hangout was a real bar in Piazza Demidoff on the Arno, renamed "Bar Amici Miei" with film posters; in the 1990s it became an American bar with no links to the film.
