Plot summary

Michel Descombes, a widowed watchmaker, keeps his shop and home in Lyon, where his teenage son Bernard works at a factory. One morning, when Bernard has not come home, police arrive and take Michel to their inspector, who tells him the boy has killed a man and gone on the run with a girl called Liliane. Michel learns nothing about the dead man, a security guard at the factory whom the workers disliked, nor about Liliane, who worked there too. Journalists press him for answers he does not have. He goes to see the woman who cared for Bernard after his mother died and sees that she knows the boy better than he does. The inspector works steadily to win his confidence.
