Philip Van Zandt
Biography
Philip Van Zandt was a Dutch-American actor who built a long career in stage, film, and television. Born in Amsterdam, he moved to the United States as an infant. He started on stage in 1925 assisting the magician Howard Thurston, turned to dramatic roles in 1927, and appeared in ten Broadway productions between 1931 and 1938. He began working in Hollywood in 1939 and went on to appear in more than 140 films over the next twenty years. A freelance actor, he had a single studio contract with Columbia in 1945 and 1946. He played magazine editor Rawlston in Citizen Kane (1941) and became known for continental types such as spies and enemy agents. He was a familiar face in Columbia two-reel comedies, with The Three Stooges, and worked on television programs including Hopalong Cassidy. In the mid-1950s he opened an acting school, and his last screen appearance came in Three Stooges comedy Fifi Blows Her Top.
