Plot summary
In the last weeks of World War II, a badly wounded man wakes in a military field hospital with amnesia. He is told his name is George W. Taylor, a Marine, and among his belongings is an unsigned letter from someone cursing him for a wrong he cannot remember. He decides to keep his amnesia secret and find out who he was. Back in Los Angeles, his old briefcase holds a note about a bank account that a friend, Larry Cravat, had opened for him. Asking after Cravat at a nightclub called The Cellar, Taylor draws the attention of two thugs and hides in the dressing room of the singer Christy Smith, where he finds a postcard to her from a woman named Mary.
