Plot summary
After serving in World War II, Nick Garcos returns to his family home in Fresno. His father, Yanko, a produce trucker, has lost his legs and been forced to sell his truck. Nick learns that a San Francisco produce dealer, Mike Figlia, is the man responsible, and he means to settle that account. Ed Kinney, who bought the Garcos truck, goes into business with him, and the two drive truckloads of apples to San Francisco's produce market. Nick arrives first, parks so that he blocks Figlia's busy wholesale stand, and the dealer's men cut a tire on his truck. Figlia hires a streetwalker named Rica to keep Nick occupied in her room while the apples are unloaded without his say. Nick makes Figlia pay for the fruit.
