Plot summary
Eddie Rice comes home from World War II with no memory of the life he led before he enlisted. The San Francisco military hospital that treated his head wound has no cure for the amnesia, and his army records say only that he signed up in Los Angeles. The doctors suggest he go there in case people who knew him can fill in the blanks. He makes the trip, and before long men and women greet him by a name he does not recognize. To them he is Eddie Riccardi, a gangster who vanished from the city, and the police and his former associates alike meet him with suspicion. A woman named Nina Martin offers him help, and Vince Alexander, a crime boss, holds an old grievance against him.
