Omid Djalili

Biography

Omid Djalili is a British comic actor and writer with Iranian roots. Born in Kensington, London, he made his comedy breakthrough at the 1995 Edinburgh Festival Fringe with Short, Fat Kebab Shop Owner's Son. In 2005 he set a box office record at the same festival with more than 16,500 ticket sales. On screen he has appeared in Gladiator (2000), The Mummy (1999), The World Is Not Enough (1999), and Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004), often playing generic Middle Eastern background characters. He won an international best supporting actor award for Casanova (2005), voiced a part in Over the Hedge (2006), and starred in The Infidel (2010). On television he played Nasim in 22 episodes of the sitcom Whoopi. He also took over as Fagin in the West End production of Oliver! and later played Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof at Chichester Festival Theatre. His comedy honors include the Time Out Award.

After being turned down by 16 drama schools, Djalili faked his A-level results to study English and theater studies at Ulster University in Coleraine.

Djalili performed the narrator part in Alan Hovhaness's tone poem "Rubaiyat" with the Philharmonia Orchestra at London's Queen Elizabeth Hall in 2010.
