Plot summary

Stevie Ting is twelve and a perfectionist, and her brother Elliot, eight, works on magic tricks. Their parents, Michael and Joanne, argue about the family's future: Joanne wants to move them to Duluth for a teaching job, while Michael wants to keep chasing his dream of playing rock music. To stop the divorce, the children hunt for a book at Shiver Me Thrifters, a thrift store, whose legend promises that the Sandman will grant their ultimate wish. They carry out its ritual, fall asleep, and land in the dream world. There they find they are lucid dreamers, able to shape what surrounds them while holding hands, and Elliot's stuffed giraffe, Baloney Tony, comes to life and joins them. Nightmara, the Queen of Nightmares, pursues them.
