Plot summary
In London on Christmas Eve, Benjamin Stahlbaum gives his children the presents their mother Marie chose for them before she died. Clara's gift is an egg-shaped box that will not open, and a note promising that everything she needs is inside. At her godfather Drosselmeyer's holiday party, the engineer explains that he made the egg for Marie years earlier. A string marked with Clara's name pulls her through a garden maze into a forest in another world, where a key hangs waiting; a mouse snatches it and flees over a frozen river. Captain Philip Hoffman, a nutcracker, brings her across the bridge to the palace, where the regents of three lands say her mother created their world and that they are at war with the Fourth Realm.
