Plot summary
Venice, 1753. Casanova's adventures with women are staged in puppet theaters across the city. The Doge, his friend but wary of the Church, warns him to marry soon or face exile, so he becomes engaged to Victoria. Then he meets Francesca Bruni, who writes illegal feminist books as Bernardo Guardi and argues for women's rights under the name Dr. Giordano de Padua. She mistakes his name for that of Lupo Salvato, his servant, and he plays along, since she despises his reputation. Her mother, deep in debt, pushes her to marry wealthy Paprizzio of Genoa, a match her late father arranged. When Paprizzio arrives, Casanova tells him his hotel is shut and puts him up in his own house while claiming to be Guardi. Pucci is tasked by the Church with prosecuting Casanova and Guardi for heresy.
