Plot summary
Mahmud Nasir is a British Muslim who lives in a London suburb with his wife, Saamiya, and their children, Rashid and Nabi. He drinks alcohol now and then. Rashid wants to marry Uzma, whose stepfather, Arshad Al-Masri, is a cleric from Waziristan; the marriage needs his blessing, and Mahmud agrees to pretend to be devout. Among his late mother's belongings he finds an adoption certificate. He was adopted as a baby by Muslim parents, and the family he was born to was Jewish.
