Plot summary
Orphaned at twelve, Maurice was raised in an Indian village by Guru Tugginmypudha, who put him in a chastity belt until he learned to love himself. He is now Pitka, a self-help guru in America who calls himself the world's number two, behind Deepak Chopra, and who longs to appear on The Oprah Winfrey Show. In Canada, Jane Bullard inherits the Toronto Maple Leafs, a team on a losing streak, and its star, Darren Roanoke, has played badly since his wife Prudence left him for Jacques Grandé, the goaltender of the Los Angeles Kings. Jane, a fan of Pitka's work, offers him $2 million to repair the marriage, and his agent, Dick Pants, tells him that success will bring the Oprah invitation.

- Mike Myers spent a year trying Guru Pitka out live in New York comedy clubs, billing the shows as An Evening With His Holiness the Guru Pitka. He reckoned a third of each audience were friends, a third had heard what he was up to, and a third thought they were coming to see a real guru.
- The film grew out of Myers's long-standing wish to make a hockey movie. A Toronto Maple Leafs supporter, he called the plot wish fulfilment, saying the only way his team would ever win a Cup was if he wrote it.
- Paramount promised the Hindu American Foundation an early look at a work print and then never did it, instead asking the group's representatives to a Minneapolis screening the night before release. Their reviewers judged the film vulgar and crude but not mean-spirited or anti-Hindu.
- Myers made a joke of the flop years later. On Saturday Night Live in December 2014, in character as Dr. Evil, he advised Sony over the pulled release of The Interview that if you really want to put a bomb in a theater, do what he did and put in The Love Guru.
