Matthew Gray Gubler
Biography
Matthew Gray Gubler is an American actor from Las Vegas who became known for playing Dr. Spencer Reid, a genius FBI profiler, on the CBS drama Criminal Minds. He studied film directing at New York University, worked as a model, and interned with Wes Anderson, who urged him to try out for The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004). He played Nico in that film, then joined Criminal Minds in 2005 and stayed through its 2020 conclusion, directing several episodes. He voiced the chipmunk Simon across Alvin and the Chipmunks and three later films. Other credits include (500) Days of Summer (2009), Life After Beth (2014), Suburban Gothic (2014), which earned him a best actor award at Screamfest, and Newness (2017). His voice work also included Jimmy Olsen in All-Star Superman, and he voiced the Riddler for Batman: Assault on Arkham (2014). He directed music videos for the Killers.

Gubler was discovered by a model scout while studying film at NYU and modeled for Tommy Hilfiger, Marc Jacobs, and American Eagle, among others.
Big break
Gubler landed the part of Nico, also called Intern #1, in Wes Anderson's movie The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. Anderson, with whom Gubler had an internship, urged him to try out for it.
Behind the camera
For the Las Vegas rock band the Killers, Gubler took on directing, editing, and co-producing duties on the music videos for "Don't Shoot Me Santa" and "Dirt Sledding."

Gubler's first book, Rumple Buttercup: A Story of Bananas, Belonging and Being Yourself, came out on April 2, 2019. He both wrote and illustrated it, and he hand-wrote or hand-drew every word and illustration, even the bar code and copyright page.
