Plot summary
Pauline is a high school student who lives with her mother Phyllis, her father Bob and her younger sister Grace, who is ill with cystic fibrosis. Phyllis is a controlling, strongly Christian mother, and Pauline has vivid dreams of mutilation and blood that leave her panting and excited when she wakes. Her family puts up with her, and her classmates find her annoying. She wants a career in medicine and resolves to have sex for the first time with a classmate, Adam, choosing a moment that suits her fascination with blood. During a sex education class, Pauline studies her own blood under a microscope.
