Plot summary
Thirty-something Daphne has left a long relationship with Adrian behind. She moves into the poolhouse at her sister Billie's home and quits her job, then follows a friend's suggestion of six months away from alcohol and men. At Christmas she visits her mother Sue, who has a European partner, Karl, and does not keep up with her daughters' lives. Sue offers no sympathy and gives her a wedding ring. At Billie's New Year's party Daphne meets Frank, who is unpredictable and eager for adventure, and Jack, a sober writer and academic. She and Jack talk for hours, and Frank, who learns Jack has been talking about her, insists on meeting her.
