Plot summary
Rome itself is the subject: the city in the Fascist 1930s and in the 1970s, remembered by Federico Fellini. As a young man of eighteen he moves from Rimini into a guesthouse run by a sick, obese woman, where the residents include a man who resembles Benito Mussolini. He visits a dilapidated and crowded brothel and a more luxurious one, and watches a cheap vaudeville show. Present-day Rome appears as a city of traffic, highways and film crews. Among the sights are streets, tunnels and an ancient catacomb whose frescoes crumble once fresh air reaches them. A noblewoman stages an extravagant display of liturgical costumes for a Cardinal and his guests.

Roma ends with a melancholic shot of actress Anna Magnani, whom the film crew met in the street during shooting; she died some months afterwards.
