Plot summary
Aboard a steamer off the North African coast in 1946, preteen Alec Ramsey watches a wild black stallion forced onto the boat while traveling with his father. He slips to the stall with sugar cubes for the horse, and the stallion's supposed owner warns him off in Arabic, calling the stallion Shetan. After a card game, his father hands Alec a pocketknife and a statue of Bucephalus. That night a storm throws Alec from his bunk, and the ship catches fire.

- El Mokhtar, an Egyptian Arabian racehorse, was the producers' first choice to portray The Black, but his owners declined any offers; he does appear in The Black Stallion Returns, by which time the studio had bought out the syndicate of owners to secure him.
- Napoleon was portrayed by a horse named Junior, who had previously appeared in National Lampoon's Animal House as Trooper, Niedermeyer's horse.
- The film features music by Carmine Coppola, the father of Hollywood producer Francis Ford Coppola, who is credited on the film as executive producer.
- In 2002 The Black Stallion was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress, having been deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
- It was Carroll Ballard's feature directing debut and the film debut of Kelly Reno, who starred opposite the Arabian horse Cass Ole as the eponymous Black Stallion.
