Plot summary
Captain Harry Lewis of the British East India Company looks into why over two thousand Indians have gone missing, but Colonel Henderson, his superior, is preoccupied with the caravans of the city's merchants, which keep disappearing. Henderson agrees to appoint someone to investigate, and Lewis expects the job. Instead it goes to the newly arrived Captain Christopher Connaught-Smith, the son of a friend of Henderson's. Lewis thinks an organized gang kills the men and animals of the caravans and buries them, with informants among the merchants of the city.
