Plot summary
Stourley Kracklite, an American architect, has been commissioned to mount an exhibition in Rome devoted to Étienne-Louis Boullée, an 18th-century French architect who stayed little known until the 20th century. His Italian colleagues question whether Boullée deserves a place in the architectural pantheon, noting that few of his buildings were ever built and that Albert Speer, Adolf Hitler's architect, drew inspiration from him. Kracklite has come to Italy with Louisa, his much younger wife. Caspasian Speckler, a younger man, serves as co-organizer of the exhibition. Kracklite suffers from recurrent stomach pains.
