Plot summary
The British colony of Hong Kong in 1910 holds the tongs, the criminal societies of China, and the Red Dragon is the largest of them in the city. Its killers use a ceremonial axe and gauntlet in crowded places, which keeps the inhabitants afraid. A group that works in secret opposes the tongs, and Mr. Ming belongs to it. He sails to Hong Kong with information about the Red Dragon. On the crossing he meets Captain Jackson Sale, a British sea officer who keeps a house in the colony, has a teenage daughter named Helena, and takes no interest in the tongs, which have never touched him. Ming puts a note inside a poetry book and gives it to Sale as a present for Helena, whose servant belongs to the resistance in secret.

- The Terror of the Tongs is notable in Hammer's output as the first of the studio's horror films to afford Christopher Lee top billing.
- Christopher Lee reported to work on The Terror of the Tongs after a vacation in Northern Italy with a deep tan, which was a problem for the make-up department because his character was supposed to have very pale skin.
