Plot summary
Pat Morgan works for the Morning News, and her editor has placed her inside the household of the philanthropist Adam Harker as a secretary under the name Miss Terry. Harker is mixed up with the mob boss Josephus Martini. After a shriek in the night, Harker is found dead below his penthouse. Inspector Russell doubts the fall was an accident and sees through Pat's cover, taking from her a card she took from Harker, printed with a hissing snake and the warning that she would hear it. Ted Rand of the Daily Express is her rival on the story; he gets into the crime scene with a borrowed police badge and phones what he learns to his paper. The residents of the building come under suspicion.
