Plot summary
Mary Stevens and Don Andrews are old friends who graduate from medical school in the same year. The two new doctors take offices in one building. Mary has to earn respect on her own, since many patients will not be treated by a woman. Don, meanwhile, has ambitions for a larger life. He begins seeing Lois Cavanaugh, whose family is wealthy and important, and his practice suffers while he enjoys the privileges of a social life. Mary's feelings for Don go beyond friendship, though he marries Lois and opens a new office with a wealthier clientele. He gives Mary an office beside his. While she makes a name for herself in medicine, Don takes money from his own practice, and jealousy and mistrust pull the two friends apart.
