Plot summary
The Craig sisters, Penny, Kay and Joan, live in Switzerland. Word comes that their father, Judson Craig, is going to marry a younger woman, Donna Lyons, in New York City, and the three of them travel there to prevent the marriage. They also want their divorced parents, Judson and Dorothy Craig, reunited. To break the engagement, they plan to find a man who will court Donna and draw her away from their father.

- Joe Pasternak wanted Judy Garland for Deanna Durbin's part, but Garland's home studio MGM would not loan her out; Durbin was instead picked up from MGM after a short film she made with Garland, and MGM dropped her contract, freeing her for the role.
- Ray Milland came in as a last-minute replacement for Louis Hayward, who had originally been cast but fell ill with pleurisy four days into filming.
- The film was developed as a vehicle for 13-year-old Jeanne Dante, who had been on Broadway in Call It a Day.
- The film turned Deanna Durbin into a star, and it led to a number of imitations of Three Smart Girls.
