Plot summary
In Baltimore, Elizabeth and John Andrew MacDonald have been married a year when he enlists for World War I. Near Christmas 1918 a telegram reports his death, and Elizabeth learns she is expecting their child. Lawrence Hamilton, owner of the chemical company where she works, supports her, and after the baby arrives she agrees to marry him, telling him she can never love him as she loved John. The boy is raised as Larry's son, named John Andrew but called Drew, and a younger son, Brian, is born later. John survived the war disfigured and has lived for twenty years in Europe under the Austrian name Erik Kessler. In 1939 Kessler comes from Europe to the United States and takes work at Hamilton Chemical, bringing Margaret, the girl he calls his daughter.

- Tomorrow Is Forever was boycotted in Aiken, South Carolina, in 1946 after Orson Welles mistakenly named the town as the place where Isaac Woodard was blinded. The error also brought protests and threats of lawsuits in Aiken; the attack actually happened near Batesburg-Leesville.

Natalie Wood's screen test for Tomorrow Is Forever required her to play a scene in which a party popper makes her character recall her parents' murder by the Nazis. She had worked with director Irving Pichel on Happy Land and was too happy to see him to cry; during production she wore a dental bridge after losing two baby teeth.- Producer Davis Lewis called the source novel "basically a mental exercise and not a piece of dramatic material" and changed the story so that the heroine's first child belonged to her first husband, who had been presumed killed in the war, leaving somewhere dramatic for the second husband to go.
- Tomorrow Is Forever, starring Claudette Colbert, Orson Welles and George Brent, was the film debut of both Richard Long and Natalie Wood.
